API 622 fugitive emission testing mainly detects the invisible micro-leakage at the valve packing and the body gasket. The body gasket is a static seal, which easily meets the fugitive emission requirements, while the packing is a dynamic seal, which is harder to meet the standard. Therefore, the fugitive emission level of a valve is mainly evaluated by testing the leakage at the packing. The API 622 standard emphasizes the fugitive emission type test of the packing, which can be carried out on a test fixture or on the valve itself. The packing is evaluated separately, usually with the packing manufacturer leading the test. Even if a valve manufacturer uses packing that has passed API 622 testing, different results may occur due to differences in valve design or manufacturing processes.
