Welding Procedure Qualification (WPQ/PQR)

Welding Procedure Qualification (WPQ / PQR) is the test process and result evaluation carried out to verify the correctness of the proposed welding procedure for a weldment, or to assess welder capability.

Purpose of welding procedure qualification:

1. To assess whether the welding contractor is capable of producing welded joints that meet the requirements of the relevant national or industry standards and technical specifications.

2. To verify whether the proposed welding procedure specification is correct.

3. To provide a reliable technical basis for preparing the formal welding procedure specification or welding procedure card.

4. To assess welder capability.

Qualification process:

1. Prepare the preliminary Welding Procedure Specification (pWPS).

2. Weld the test coupon and prepare the test specimens.

3. Inspect and test the test coupon and specimens.

4. Determine whether the welded joint meets the required service performance.

5. Issue the welding procedure qualification report to qualify the proposed welding procedure specification.
