API 6FA is the fire test standard for pipeline valves — gate, globe and check valves — and for wellhead and christmas tree equipment. The current edition is API 6FA, 2026. For manufacturers holding certificates against an earlier edition, the practical question is simple: does my certificate still satisfy my customers?
Who API 6FA applies to
- Gate, globe and check valves for pipeline service
- Wellhead and christmas tree equipment, often assessed together with API Spec 6A
- Larger bore and higher pressure class valves where API 607 does not apply
If your product is a soft-seated quarter-turn valve, API 607 is the applicable standard instead. Using API 6FA for a quarter-turn valve, or API 607 for a pipeline gate valve, is a scope error that will surface during document review.
What the 2026 edition emphasises
- Tighter test setup and instrumentation requirements, improving reproducibility of the burn exposure between laboratories
- Clarified acceptance criteria for through-seat leakage and external leakage, with better-defined measurement points and timing
- Explicit operational test expectations during and after the burn, so operability evidence is recorded consistently
- Refined qualification range guidance for extending a tested sample across a size and pressure-class family
- Updated normative references to current API and ISO documents
The test philosophy is unchanged: the valve is burned, must remain operable, and must keep leakage within defined limits during and after exposure. The 2026 edition makes the method more prescriptive so results from different laboratories are comparable.
When re-qualification is required
- The contract names API 6FA 2026. The edition written into the purchase order governs — always test to it.
- Design or material change. New seat material, packing, stem seal, body design or a changed manufacturing process can invalidate the existing qualification.
- Wellhead equipment scope change. Adding sizes, pressure ratings or configurations beyond the original qualified range.
- End-user recency rules. Some operators require evidence against the current edition regardless of product changes.
Planning an API 6FA campaign efficiently
- Define the full qualification range up front — testing one representative size is far cheaper than several separate campaigns later
- Confirm whether API Spec 6A requirements must be covered in the same programme
- Lock the bill of materials: seat, packing, gasket and stem seal part numbers must match what will be produced
- Decide early whether client or class society witnessing is required
How Valverz can help
Valverz is a third-party testing body running API 6FA fire tests to the current edition for pipeline valves and wellhead equipment, issuing independent reports and certificates. We also advise on qualification range so one campaign covers as much of your product family as the standard permits. Send your specification for a test plan and quotation within 1 working day.
